Montclair and Mayfair, east of downtown Denver, are two of the city’s oldest neighborhoods.

Considered “sister” neighborhoods, Montclair is designated as a City and County of Denver neighborhood, while Mayfair is not. The two communities overlap and together encompass the area north to south between East Colfax Avenue and 6^th Avenue and east to west between Quebec and Eudora Streets.

Both feature architectural styles that range from Tudor and Queen Anne to ranch homes and cottages.

Much has been written about Montclair’s history:  Prussian aristocrat Baron Walter von Richthofen was behind its development in the late 1880s. (If the name sounds familiar, that’s because he was uncle to WWI German pilot Manfred von Richthofen, aka “the Red Baron.”) His dream was to build a utopian community of three-story homes, museums, health spas and casinos. He constructed the 35-room Richthofen Castle, now the community’s centerpiece at 12^th Avenue and Pontiac St. The castle has been restored and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Nearly 6,000 people live in the neighborhood today.

At 109 years old, the Historic Montclair Community Association Inc. is the oldest home association in Denver. The association sponsors community events, a neighborhood watch program and “meet-the-candidate” nights as well as publishing the quarterly Montclarion Newsletter.

Formed later than Montclair, Mayfair is a neighborhood with an estimated 3,200 households and a long history of successful local businesses. The Colfax-Mayfair Business Improvement District has been working with the City of Denver since 2014 to stimulate business and public improvements in the area.

Mayfair Neighbors, Inc. publishes the quarterly Mayfair Mirror and sponsors numerous community events including a Concert in the Park, Spring Shred-A-Thon, Easter egg hunt and Fourth of July Bike Parade.

Residents of the two neighborhoods enjoy four parks: Mayfair, Montclair Park, Kittredge Park and Denison. Nearby are City Park, the Denver Zoo, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and Cherry Creek Shopping Center. All the exciting things you can do downtown are only a quick commute down 8^th Avenue.

Even more entertainment and dining options are available since the completion of 9+CO, a 26-acre urban infill project that features an AMC theatre, Hopdoddy Burger Bar, Postino Wine Café and much more. 9+CO has four acres of open space and offer a variety of for-sale housing options such as condos, townhomes, and affordable housing units as well as apartment rentals.

The area has three Denver Public Schools, Montclair School of Academics and Enrichment (early childhood education-5^th grade), Montclair Elementary and Palmer Elementary as well as the St. James Catholic School (pre-K-8) and the International School of Denver (K-8).

Montclair and Mayfair are beautiful, secluded neighborhoods with tree-lined streets, magnificent brick homes and lots of history. They are both wonderful family-oriented communities.
